Annie Turnbo Malone
Annie Turnbo Malone, was born in Metropolis, Illinois, in 1869. In 1900, she introduced a patented pressing comb as well as hair pullers. She was also the founder and president of Poro College and Poro Products. By the 1920s Malone’s wealth was estimated to be around $14 million.
Thermo hair curlers were invented by African American inventor Soloman Harper in 1930.

Madam C. J. Walker was an entrepreneur who built her empire developing hair products and cosmetics for black women. Before her death in 1919, she was a millionaire.
The alkaline relaxer was actually discovered in the 19th century when African-Americans realized that washing and combing hair with a lye soap helped to straighten it. Proline, manufactures of Dark and Lovely, officially “invented” the relaxer in 1971.
